About Portal
Portal was Wizards of the Coast's first major attempt at a set new players could pick up and understand, meant to serve as a doorway into the regular expert level editions. The rules were stripped back to match. Portal has no instants, enchantments or artifacts, and its cards used plain words like intercept, discard pile and deck where the main game said block, graveyard and library. Creatures carried no creature types, and the rules text was printed in bold so it stood apart from the flavor text.
The set runs to 215 cards: 55 rares, 55 uncommons, 85 commons and 20 basic lands, with alternate art versions of some cards bringing published lists to 222. Portal was also sold in starter sets with two 35 card decks, a booster, a play guide and a play mat. Two later sets carried the name, Portal Second Age in 1998 and Portal Three Kingdoms in 1999, and each has its own card list.
The chase
For a beginner set, Portal holds some famous spells. Collectors look for the rares Wrath of God, Armageddon, Natural Order, Sylvan Tutor, Cruel Tutor, Last Chance and Winds of Change, along with the uncommon Personal Tutor. Each pack has one rare slot, and which rare lands in it is random.
Contents and configurations are as published for the 1997 release, are subject to change and are shown as a guide. We do not print pull odds on this page. Pulls are random and never guaranteed.
