Why Darkness Ablaze

Darkness Ablaze is the third Sword & Shield set and the one collectors remember for Charizard: the Charizard VMAX rainbow rare is the card the set is chased for, alongside Grimmsnarl VMAX and the full art trainers. Out of print since 2020, so packs only come from broken boxes now.

The set released on August 14, 2020. The Pokemon Company describes it as over 185 cards, with 14 Pokemon V and 7 Pokemon VMAX shown in their Gigantamax forms. Charizard VMAX, Grimmsnarl VMAX and Butterfree VMAX are the VMAX cards it names first, and Eternatus arrives as a Pokemon V alongside Centiskorch V, Mew V and Galarian Slowbro V. It also adds more than 15 Trainer cards and 3 new Special Energy cards.

The chase

Published set lists number the main set to 189, with 12 secret rares numbered past it, from 190 to 201. Charizard VMAX is card 20. Grimmsnarl VMAX is 115 and Eternatus VMAX is 117. The full art run near the top of the main set includes the trainers Kabu, Piers, Pokemon Breeder's Nurturing and Rose, numbered 186 to 189. The secret rares include Butterfree VMAX, Centiskorch VMAX, Eternatus VMAX, Scizor VMAX and Salamence VMAX, plus a secret rare Rillaboom.

A single pack is the simplest way to take a swing at a set that is no longer on retail shelves. Each pack wrapper is printed with ten game cards.
