About the set
Pitch Black released on July 17, 2026 as part of the Mega Evolution series and brings the Mega Evolution Pokemon from the Mega Dimension DLC of Pokemon Legends: Z-A to the card game. It is a compact expansion: 120 cards in total, 84 in the main set plus 36 secret rares. The English set is built from the Japanese Abyss Eye expansion.
Mega Darkrai ex headlines, backed by Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Chandelure ex, and Mega Excadrill ex, for six Mega Evolution Pokemon ex and four Pokemon ex in the set.
The secret rares break down as 11 Illustration Rares, 18 Ultra Rares, and six Special Illustration Rares, with the Mega Darkrai ex Mega Hyper Rare closing the set at card 120.
The Build & Battle Box is built for the Prerelease format: a 40-card deck with four Prize cards instead of the usual 60 and six. The deck features key cards from current and prior expansions and one of four unique foil promos, Miraidon (MEP Black Star Promo 082), Slowbro (083), Dhelmise (084), or Bastiodon (085), plus a deck-building tip sheet. Select Play! Pokemon stores sold the box early from July 4, 2026 for Prerelease events ahead of the July 17 launch.

Which promo cards can be in the Build & Battle Box?
One of four: Miraidon (MEP Black Star Promo 082), Slowbro (083), Dhelmise (084), or Bastiodon (085). The deck inside is built around whichever promo the box carries. The promo is random and cannot be chosen from a sealed box.

Pitch Black has 120 cards in total: 84 in the main set plus 36 secret rares. It released on July 17, 2026 as part of the Mega Evolution series, with Build & Battle Boxes sold early at Play! Pokemon Prerelease events from July 4, 2026.
What is the Prerelease format?
Prerelease games use a 40-card deck with four Prize cards set aside instead of a 60-card deck with six. The Build & Battle Box deck is ready to play in that format out of the box, and the four booster packs can be used to improve it.
Is the Build & Battle Box better than the Elite Trainer Box?
They serve different buyers. The Build & Battle Box is four packs plus a playable 40-card deck and one of four promos, the cheapest way to start playing Pitch Black. The Elite Trainer Box is nine packs plus the exclusive Zarude full-art promo, sleeves, Energy cards, dice, and a storage box. Choose the Build & Battle Box to play, the ETB to open packs with accessories.
